raisin nut squares

Fern lived next door to us when I was a child in Eureka, MI. She made this raisin cake and shared with all of us girls. I can remember going next door for this snack cake and the walk through the snow being worth it!

Ingredients

  • RAISIN MIXTURE
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 2 cups water
  • BATTER
  • 1 stick butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 teaspoon allspice
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 - beaten egg
  • 1/2 cup nuts

How To Make raisin nut squares

  • Step 1
    Boil raisins for 10 minutes. Add butter and remove from the stove. Set and cool 10 minutes.
  • Step 2
    Combine dry ingredients and add rasin mixture and mix well with spoon. Add beaten egg and mix well. Add nuts if desired.
  • Step 3
    Pour into greased 1/2 sheet pan (10" by 14"). Bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 35 minutes. You may wish to use less of the spices at first but is best with a bit of spiceness. Glaze with a powdered sugar frosting when warm.
