These are a wonderful holiday cookie to add with the traditional cookies. Topped with the coarse sprinkling sugar in holiday colors or the use of colored sugar gives this cookie a very festive appearance.

The cardamom and ginger mixed together give a warmth to the cookie and complement the orange perfectly. These cookies are completely addictive!

Makes 5 1/2 dozen cookies
Ingredients
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1 cup butter, softened
- 1 cup vegetable shortening
- 2 large eggs
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons grated orange peel
- 1 teaspoon cream of tartar
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom
- 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup coarse sprinkling sugar (holiday colors optional) or granulated sugar
How To Make orange spice cookies

Step 1In a large mixing bowl, combine 1 c granulated sugar, 1 c powdered sugar, butter, shortening, and eggs. Beat at medium speed until light and fluffy.

Step 2Add flour, peel, cream of tartar, baking soda, cardamom, ginger, and salt to a separate bowl.

Step 3Slowly add flour to sugar/butter mixture. Beat at low speed until soft dough forms.

Step 4Cover with plastic wrap and chill 1 to 2 hours or until firm.

Step 5Heat oven to 350 degrees. Shape dough into 1 inch balls.

Step 6Roll balls in sprinkling sugar or granulated sugar. Place balls 2 inches apart on a parchment paper lined cookie sheet.

Step 7Flatten balls with bottom of a drinking glass.

Step 8Wipe the glass with a damp cloth to prevent sticking.

Step 9Bake for 12 to 13 minutes or until light golden brown.

Step 10Let cool for 1 minute before removing from cookie sheet. Cool completely before storing.
