My grandpa use to make this on special occasions. This cake takes a little while to bake - but it is well worth the wait. It is a rich cake BUT so good.

Ingredients

  • 4 - eggs
  • 1 cup butter
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking soda
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 3 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 can coconut flakes
  • 1 pound orange slice candies, chopped
  • 1 pound dates, chopped
  • 2 cups pecans, chopped
  • TOPPING -
  • 1 cup unsweetened orange juice
  • 2 cups confectioners' sugar

How To Make orange slice cake

  • Step 1
    Preheat oven: 275 degrees....Grease & flour tube pan; set aside.
  • Step 2
    In large bowl: cream butter & sugar, add eggs 1 at a time; beat well. Dissolve baking soda & buttermilk in a small dish; add to creamed mixture.
  • Step 3
    In another large bowl: add flour, dates, nuts, coconut & candies; stir ingredients around so they are all coated with the flour. Slowly add the flour mixture to the creamed mixture & - MIX WITH HAND!
  • Step 4
    Put in prepared tube pan -- Bake for 2 1/2 to 3 hours. DO NOT REMOVE FROM PAN!!
  • Step 5
    TOPPING - Combine orange juice & confectioners sugar & pour over "HOT" cake. Let cake sit in pan over night.
