My mother used to make this for my birthday, because I LOVE chocolate cake. And this recipe is one of my favorites for chocolate cake.

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup butter, softened
  • 1-2/3 cup sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1-1/2 cup all purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup whole wheat flour
  • 2/3 cup baking cocoa
  • 1-1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1-1/3 cup water
  • 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 2/3 cup fat-free, evaporated milk

How To Make old-fashioned chocolate cake

  • Step 1
    Heat oven to 350. Spray 2- 9" round baking pans w/ cooking spray. In lg bowl, combine butter, sugar, eggs and vanilla. Beat on high w/ mixer for 3 mins.
  • Step 2
    In another bowl, combine flours, baking cocoa, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Add alternately w/ water to butter mix. Beat just until combined. Pour evenly into pans. Bake 30-35 min, or until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. cool.
  • Step 3
    Remove cooled cakes from pans. Place chocolate chips in microwaveable bowl. Microwave on high for 1-1/2 mins, stir. Microwave and stir until smooth. Whisk in powdered sugar and milk until smooth. Frost cakes.
