This was a personal favorite of my dads! He loved this cake.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 - egg
  • 1/2 cup dark molasses (or 3/4 cup light molasses)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon ginger, ground
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon, ground
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup hot water
  • 1/2 cup Fat-Free Cool Whip, optional

How To Make old-fashioned molasses cake

  • Mixing butter and sugar in a bowl.
    Step 1
    Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. In a small bowl, beat the butter and sugar until crumbly, about 2 minutes.
  • Beating in the egg.
    Step 2
    Beat in the egg.
  • Adding molasses to the batter.
    Step 3
    Beat in the molasses.
  • Flour, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon, and salt in a bowl.
    Step 4
    In a separate bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon, and salt.
  • Adding flour to dry ingredients with water.
    Step 5
    Add to the butter mixture alternately with the water, mixing well after each addition.
  • Batter poured into baking dish.
    Step 6
    Transfer to a 9-in. square baking pan coated with cooking spray.
  • Toothpick coming out of the cake clean.
    Step 7
    Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean.
  • Molasses cake cooling on a wire rack.
    Step 8
    Cool on a wire rack.
  • A square of old fashioned molasses cake.
    Step 9
    Cut into squares; garnish with whipped topping.
