old time recipe; oldie but goodie.. When I was growing up in the 1940s we didn't have a lot of money. We had a hugh garden, & we canned any extra vegetables for winter. We also gathered apples form our orchard & butternuts. ( Which you don't see much anymore) Mom always bought a couple of bushels of peaches in the fall which we canned but first we had sliced peaches served on this wonderful cake

Ingredients

  • 3 cups flour
  • 3 cups white sugar
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1-1/2 cup vegetable shortning
  • 6 - whole eggs
  • l teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup butternuts chopped..( i now use walnuts)

How To Make my mom's poor mans pound cake .

  • Step 1
    Preheat oven to 350. Mix all ingredients in a large bowl& beat for 5 minutes or until well mixed.
  • Step 2
    Pour into a lightly greased 10 inch tube pan.Bake for about 70 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean.
  • Step 3
    Cool cake in pan on a cooling rack. then flip out of pan. Best served at room temperature or slightly chilled. Serve with slicd peaches, strawberries or fuit of your choice.
