MORAVIAN SUGAR CAKE IS A STAPLE IN MY TOWN.THIS RECIPE IS A SWEET YEAST BREAD, GREAT WITH COFFEE. THE MORAVIAN'S CAME TO WINSTON-SALEM IN 1766 AND BUILT A SMALL COMMUNITY IN WHATS THE DOWNTOWN PART OF WINSTON-SALEM. WHAT IS NOW CALLED OLD SALEM. GOOGLE THEM ITS VERY INTERESTING READING..THEY BROUGHT WITH THEM SOME REALLY GOOD EATS. ITS OF GERMAN ORIGIN.

Ingredients
- 3 - eggs , beaten
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1/2 cup crisco shortening
- 1 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup instant potatoes
- 2 cups water, boiling
- 1/2 teaspoon mace
- 2 packages yeast
- 1 teaspoon salt
- - flour to make dough soft around 4 cups
- - heavy cream
- - brown sugar
- - cinnamon
How To Make moravian sugar cake

Step 1add boiling water to instant potatoes, add butter and crisco. add sugar minus 2T. dissolve yeast in 1/4 cup of very warm water and add 2T sugar. add yeast and beaten eggs to cooled potato mixture. Mix well, beat in 4 cups of flour, mace and salt. add flour to make dough soft. knead on floured surface until the dough feels like elastic. Place in an oiled bowl. Let rise until the dough is doubled. Divide dough into 2 pieces. roll out dought to fit a 12x15" greased jelly pan. cover and let rise for 1 hour (warm place) punch indentions into dough about 1 inch apart. sprinkle HEAVYILY with brown sugar,dot with an generous amount of butter cubes and sprinkle with cinnamon. drizzle with heavy cream. bake at 400 till bread is done somewhere around 20 minutes or until golden brown.

Step 2Tips: drizzle cream with a Tablespoon. make sure brown sugar gets into holes in the dough and make sure the holes do NOT go all the way though the dough. i use my hands to roll out dough in pans make sure your hands are oiled this just does better for me rather than rolling it out. THIS SMELLS SO GOOD BAKING AND IS VERY GOOD SERVED WARM WITH COFFEE.
