ma ann's chocolate sheet cake

One of my very best friends, Ma Ann, gave me this recipe years ago and I've been making it ever since. Don't you dare make fun of my very well seasoned 9x13 pan. I've had it for 42 years and refuse to part with it since it was a wedding gift. LOL!

Ingredients

  • CAKE:
  • 1 cup oil
  • 1 stick butter or margarine
  • 1 cup water
  • 4 tablespoons baking cocoa
  • 2 cups self-rising flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 - eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • FROSTING:
  • 1 stick butter or margarine
  • 3 tablespoons milk
  • 3 tablespoons baking cocoa
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 16 ounces powdered sugar
  • 3/4 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)

How To Make ma ann's chocolate sheet cake

  • Step 1
    Bring to a boil the first 4 ingredients in a medium size saucepan, stirring constantly. Preheat oven to 350.
  • Step 2
    Combine the flour and sugar & stir to combine. Mix the buttermilk and baking soda together and add in to the flour/sugar mixture. Add in the eggs and vanilla.
  • Step 3
    Combine the two mixtures together and mix well with an electric mixer just until smooth.
  • Step 4
    Pour into a 9 x 13 pan that has been sprayed with Pam. Bake for approximately 45 minutes @ 350 degrees & then cool completely.
  • Step 5
    FROSTING: In a medium size saucepan, add the butter, milk and cocoa and bring to a boil, stirring constantly.
  • Step 6
    Remove from heat and add in the vanilla and stir. Gradually add in the powdered sugar and blend until smooth. Add the nuts if desired, combine well and frost top of cooled cake.
