My daughter wanted a chocolate cake for her 14th Birthday. I was going to buy a mix, but then my Mom told me about this recipe from Hershey she found. It makes a very rich and moist chocolate cake and the frosting comes out just perfect!

Ingredients

  • FOR THE CAKE

  • 2 c
    sugar
  • 1 3/4 c
    all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 c
    cocoa
  • 1 1/2 tsp
    baking powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp
    baking soda
  • 1 tsp
    salt
  • 2
    eggs
  • 1 c
    milk
  • 1/2 c
    vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp
    vanilla extract
  • 1 c
    boiling water
  • 4 c
    chocolate frosting
  • FOR THE FROSTING

  • 1 stick
    butter
  • 2/3 c
    cocoa
  • 3 c
    powdered sugar
  • 1/3 c
    milk
  • 1 tsp
    vanilla extract

How to Make Homemade Chocolate Cake

Step-by-Step

  1. Heat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour two 9-inch round baking pans.
  2. Stir together sugar, flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda and salt in large bowl. Add eggs, milk, oil and vanilla; beat on medium speed of mixer 2 minutes. Stir in boiling water (batter will be thin). Pour batter into prepared pans.
  3. Bake 30 to 35 minutes or until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes; remove from pans to wire racks. Cool completely. Frost with chocolate frosting.
  4. FOR THE FROSTING
  5. Melt butter. Stir in cocoa. Alternately add powdered sugar and milk, beating to spreading consistency. Add small amount additional milk, if needed. Stir in vanilla. About 2 cups frosting.
  6. For a 13x9x2-inch baking pan, bake 34-40 min. minutes.
  7. For a 3 layer cake using 8-inch round pans, bake 30 to 35
  8. For cup cakes, bake 22 to 25 minutes.
