Every time I make this cake, I am reminded of my sweet grandmother (Nan), who we all loved very much. She was a wonderful Southern cook. She passed away several years ago now, but left a true legacy—she created this marvelous cake! It is the family favorite when I ask, “What kind of cake would you like?” When you taste its wonderful, ooey-gooey, chocolaty taste, you will soon know why. I love the ease of preparation, too, which is especially nice in the hustle and bustle of the world we live in.

Blue Ribbon Recipe

This chocolate cake is Rich with a capital R! Easy to make, it's sweet, moist, and very chocolatey. Use your favorite chocolate cake mix. We opted for a dark chocolate fudge one. What turns an ordinary boxed cake into something very special is the silky smooth chocolate sauce poured on top. Sweet and decadent, it turns this into a chocolate lover's dream dessert.

  • CAKE
  • 1 box chocolate cake mix, we prefer dark chocolate fudge
  • 1 cup water, per cake package directions
  • 3 large eggs, per cake package directions
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil, per cake package directions
  • HOT CHOCOLATE SAUCE
  • 3 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup dark chocolate cocoa (unsweetened)
  • 1 cup milk
  • 3/4 cup butter
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

How To Make heaven’s own hot chocolate cake

  • Bake a chocolate cake according to package ingredients.
    Step 1
Bake one chocolate fudge cake mix, as directed on the box, in a 9” X 12” pan. Cool the cake.
  • Cut the cake into 12 squares.
    Step 2
Cut the cake into serving squares. Depending on your cut, you can get either 12 servings (4 cuts horizontally and 4 cuts vertically) or 20 smaller servings (5 cuts horizontally and 4 cuts vertically).
  • Bring all hot chocolate sauce ingredients, except vanilla, into a saucepan.
    Step 3
Prepare the hot chocolate syrup. Bring all ingredients except vanilla to a full rolling boil that you cannot stir down. Then boil for 1 full minute, stirring constantly. Be careful not to overcook, or this mixture will crystallize.
  • Take off the heat and add vanilla extract.
    Step 4
Take off the heat and carefully add vanilla extract.
  • Pour the sauce over the sliced cake.
    Step 5
Slowly pour over the baked cake, already cut into serving squares, trying to evenly cover. Refrigerate until ready to serve, or serve warm with ice cream or a dollop of sweetened whipped cream and chocolate curls, if desired. Refrigerate any leftovers and store covered.
