This cake is something my Grandma made during the depression. I always thought it sounded odd, but it is actually pretty good. My Dad said that as kids (he was one of 9) it was one thing that was always a treat.

Ingredients

1 c
brown sugar
1 c
raisins
1 tsp
cinnamon
1/2 tsp
allspice
1/4 tsp
cloves, ground
1/3 c
shortening (crisco)
1 c
water
2 c
flour
1 tsp
baking soda
1 tsp
salt

How to Make Grandma's Poor Man's Cake

Step-by-Step

  • 1In a large sauce pan boil 1 cup water, add first 6 ingredients, boil together until luke warm, stir. Remove from burner
  • 2In large mixing bowl add all dry ingredients, mix together with fork. Sift into the sauce pan. Mix well.
  • 3Grease or spray a 9x9 baking dish. Pour mixture in dish, and spread evenly.
  • 4Bake at 350 for 30-35 minutes. Watch it towards end so it doesn't get too dark.

    Enjoy!
    (You might be able to make this gluten free by using a gluten free flour, haven't tried it, but it might work.)
