grandma's poor man's cake

This cake is something my Grandma made during the depression. I always thought it sounded odd, but it is actually pretty good. My Dad said that as kids (he was one of 9) it was one thing that was always a treat.

Ingredients
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1 cup raisins
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon allspice
- 1/4 teaspoon cloves, ground
- 1/3 cup shortening (crisco)
- 1 cup water
- 2 cups flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
How To Make grandma's poor man's cake

Step 1In a large sauce pan boil 1 cup water, add first 6 ingredients, boil together until luke warm, stir. Remove from burner

Step 2In large mixing bowl add all dry ingredients, mix together with fork. Sift into the sauce pan. Mix well.

Step 3Grease or spray a 9x9 baking dish. Pour mixture in dish, and spread evenly.

Step 4Bake at 350 for 30-35 minutes. Watch it towards end so it doesn't get too dark. Enjoy! (You might be able to make this gluten free by using a gluten free flour, haven't tried it, but it might work.)
