This recipe came from my husband's grandmother, Ella Taylor, and is a favorite in our family.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon nutmeg
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 2 - eggs
  • 1/2 cup butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup raisins (optional)
  • 1/2 cup walnuts, chopped (optional)
  • 4 cups apples, peeled and diced

How To Make grandma taylor's apple cake

  • Step 1
Blend together sugar, eggs and butter.
  • Step 2
In a separate large bowl sift together the dry ingredients, then add the nuts and raisins to the flour mixture.
  • Step 3
Add the egg mixture to the flour mixture.
  • Step 4
Blend in the apples. Note - the mixture will be VERY thick and sticky, and it may look like you have way too many apples, but don't worry that's how it should look.
  • Step 5
Pour into a greased and floured 9x9 inch pan. Bake 350 degrees for 1 hour, or until done.
  • Step 6
Glaze - The recipe just says mix together powder sugar and apple juice, so I'm guessing at the amounts, but try 1 C powder sugar and 2 Tbl apple juice. The glaze should be on the thick side, spread over the cake while it is hot. It will thin out once it's on the cake. Alternatively, you can just dust the top of the cake with powder sugar, it's good either way.
