This recipe has got to be over a 100 years old. My grandmother made this when my mom was growing up. Then my mom made it for her family, now I make it and my husband loves it.

Ingredients
- 1 cup white sugar
- 1/2 cup vegetable shortening
- 1 teaspoon baking soda , put with 1 tablespoon of hot water to dissolve
- 1 cup unsweetened applesauce
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
- 1 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1 - pinch salt
- 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup raisins

Step 1Preheat oven 350.In a bowl with a electric mixer add sugar and shortening mix together until nice and creamy. Take the dissolved baking soda and mix it with the applesauce, add to creamed mixture,mix together. In a seperate bowl mix the dry ingredients together then add to creamed mixture, mix well then add raisins, mix together. Put in a greased and flour 8 by 8 pan, bake for 45 min. or till done.
