  • 2 1/2 c
    cake flour
  • 2 1/2 tsp
    baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp
    baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp
    salt
  • 2 tsp
    cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp
    nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp
    allspice, ground
  • 1/4 tsp
    mace
  • 1/2 tsp
    cloves, ground
  • 3/4 c
    shortening
  • 1 c
    brown sugar
  • 3
    eggs
  • 1 c
    sour milk or buttermilk

How to Make Golden Spice Cake

Step-by-Step

  1. Sift flour; measure; add baking powder, soda, salt, and spices; sift again.
  2. Cream shortening; add sugar gradually; cream together until light and fluffy.
  3. Add unbeaten eggs one at a time beating thoroughly after each addition.
  4. Add dry ingredients alternately with sour milk or buttermilk, stirring only enough after each addition to blend thoroughly.
  5. Pour into a greased pan 13 by 9 by2 inches. (My mother made a round 2 layer cake)
  6. Bake in a moderate oven (350 F.) 45 to 50 minutes.
  7. When cool spread with any desired frosting. (My mother used Burnt Sugar Frosting.)
