Ingredients
- 2 1/2 cups cake flour
- 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 2 teaspoons cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon allspice, ground
- 1/4 teaspoon mace
- 1/2 teaspoon cloves, ground
- 3/4 cup shortening
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 3 - eggs
- 1 cup sour milk or buttermilk
How To Make golden spice cake

Step 1Sift flour; measure; add baking powder, soda, salt, and spices; sift again.

Step 2Cream shortening; add sugar gradually; cream together until light and fluffy.

Step 3Add unbeaten eggs one at a time beating thoroughly after each addition.

Step 4Add dry ingredients alternately with sour milk or buttermilk, stirring only enough after each addition to blend thoroughly.

Step 5Pour into a greased pan 13 by 9 by2 inches. (My mother made a round 2 layer cake)

Step 6Bake in a moderate oven (350 F.) 45 to 50 minutes.

Step 7When cool spread with any desired frosting. (My mother used Burnt Sugar Frosting.)
