I received this recipe from an old friend of the family, When I was just 11 years old she made it for us for the first time.

Ingredients

SIFT TOGETHER

4 c
all purpose flour
2 tsp
baking powder
1 tsp
cinnamon
1 tsp
salt
1 tsp
cloves
1 tsp
freshly grated nutmeg
1 tsp
allspice, ground

CREAM TOGETHER

1/2 lb
butter
2 c
sugar
6
eggs (one at a time)

ADD ALTERNATING TO FLOUR MIXTURE

1 tsp
baking soda (disolved in 1 1/4 c. buttermilk or sour cream)

THEN ADD:

2 lb
pecan halves
1 can(s)
#303 crushed pinapple, drained
2 lb
red cherries, candied
1/2 lb
white or golden raisens
1 qt
smuckers appricot preserves

How to Make German Fruit Cake

Step-by-Step

  • 1Bake in 2-3 8 inch layer round pans.Bake 350 for 1 1/2 hours or until pick comes our clean.
  • 2Frosting:

    2 cups evaporated milk (canned cream)
    2 cups sugar
    6 egg yolks (only)
    1/2 pound butter

    Cook & stir constantly over medium heat until thick
    (about 12 minutes)
    Remove from heat and add:
    1 teaspoon vanilla
    2 cups chopped pecans
    2 cups flaked coconut

    Beat until thick and cooled

    Spread on cake.
