Everyone loves funnel cakes! Who knew they were so easy to make at home? Load them up with powdered sugar, strawberries, whipped cream, and chocolate sauce - or - eat them plain and piping hot. Either way, you don't have to wait for the County Fair to enjoy them. :)

Blue Ribbon Recipe

If the first thing you do when you visit a fair is get a warm, crispy funnel cake, then this recipe is for you. Chris's funnel cake recipe lets you make them at home! We did have to add a little more milk to get the proper consistency, but they still turned out great. It was fun to play around and learn the technique of the swirl (each funnel cake will look different). We love all the toppings you can add. Tons of powdered sugar is the delicious classic. This time we added chocolate sauce, strawberries, and whipped cream. Next time, we may do caramel sauce and chopped peanut butter cups. The toppings are endless!

Note: If you do not have a funnel and you have a measuring cup with a spout, that will work too. Test Kitchen Avatar The Test Kitchen

How to Make Funnel Cakes

Step-by-Step

  1. Lightly beat the eggs and then whisk in milk and vanilla.
  2. Sift dry ingredients together.
  3. Gradually add dry ingredients to milk mixture. Beat until smooth.
  4. Heat oil in a frying pan to 375 degrees. (Make sure oil is heated enough or batter or will not cook quickly enough to retain shape.)
  5. Using a standard kitchen funnel with a 1/2" hole, drizzle the batter quickly onto the hot oil, spiraling the batter placement so that you have a circular web of dough. Fry for 45 seconds or until brown. Then flip and fry the underside until evenly brown.
  6. Remove the cake from the oil and let drain on a paper towel.
  7. Dust with powdered sugar and then load with the toppings of your choice. Enjoy!
