I have made this recipe for years, it is one of my favorites. I make it often for company because it is so quick and easy.

1 c
flour, sifted
2 tsp
baking powder
1/2 tsp
1/2 c
3/4 c
walnuts, chopped
1/2 c
1 tsp
vanilla extract
2 Tbsp
shortening, melted
1 oz
chocolate, unsweeted and melted
1/4 c
cocoa, unsweetened
3/4 c
brown sugar, firmly packed
1.75 c
water, hot
whipped cream, optional


1Sift flour with baking powder, salt and sugar into bowl; add nuts, then stir in milk, vanilla, shortening and chocolate.
2Spread batter in greased 8-inch square pan.
3Mix cocoa with brown sugar, stir in hot water and pour over batter.
4Bake at 375 40 minutes - As pudding bakes, cake layer forms on top with rich sauce on bottom.
5Spoon warm pudding cake into dessert dishes and top with whipped cream (or ice cream!), if desired.
