easiest red velvet cake

I got this recipe from a dear friend 30+ years ago. I have made it many times and always get rave reviews. I even used the same recipe to make red velvet whoopie pies for my co workers at Valentine this year. Total success! They were gone in less than an hour!

Ingredients

  • 1 box devil's food cake mix
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla flavoring
  • 1 bottle red food coloring
  • 1 package cream cheese (room temp)
  • 1 stick butter or margarine (room temp)
  • 1 box powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans
  • 1 - capful vanilla flavor (use the cap on the bottle)
  • 12 - pecan halves

How To Make easiest red velvet cake

  • Step 1
    Spray with baking spray 2 9in round cake pans. preheat oven according to pkg directions.
  • Step 2
    mix cake according to pkg directions and add vanilla and red colorong at end. blend well. pour into prepared pans and bake as directed. cool cake completely.
  • Step 3
    cream together cream cheese and butter well. add 1 capful vanilla then add powdered sugar a little at a time mixing well after each addition. (you might not need the entire box, but I usually do). Add chopped pecans to frosting. Spread over cooled cake. If you want a beautiful presentation place 12 pecan halves on top of cake (1 for each slice!) Enjoy!!!
