This is an old recipe from 1941. My grampa use to make this when I was younger & then my mom took it over.

It is made in an 8 inch square pan.

Ingredients

  • 2 c
    sifted flour
  • 3 tsp
    baking powder
  • 2 Tbsp
    sugar
  • 1/2 tsp
    salt
  • 1/4 c
    shortening
  • 1
    egg, beaten
  • 3/4 c
    milk
  • 1/4 c
    butter
  • 1/2 c
    firmly packed brown sugar
  • 1 tsp
    cinnamon
  • 1 Tbsp
    heavy cream
  • 2 c
    thinly sliced apples

How to Make DUTCH APPLE CAKE

Step-by-Step

  1. FIRST MIXTURE: Sift flour, baking powder & salt together; add sugar.

    Cut in shortening thoroughly.
  2. Combine egg & milk; add to first mixture to make a soft dough.

    Set aside......
  3. BOTTOM LAYER: Crust - - Melt butter; add brown sugar, cinnamon & heavy cream - mix well.

    Turn into greased 8 inch square pan.
  4. Press apple slices into crust mixture & then spread dough (first mixture) over apples.
  5. Bake at 350 degrees for about 50 minutes.

    Serve with whipped cream....
