diane's chocolate chip date cake

Doreen Simpson shared this recipe with me in 1976. It's moist and really tasty. Plus the chocolate chips on top are like free frosting without the trouble. Wonderful picnic cake bc you can hold it in your hand to eat.

Ingredients
- STEP 1
- 1 cup cut-up dates
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 cup hot water
- STEP 2
- 1 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup butter
- STEP 3
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 3/4 cups plain flour
- 1 tablespoon cocoa, unsweetened
- 1 teaspoon salt
- STEP 4
- 1 package 12 oz. chocolate chips
- 1/2 cup chopped nuts
How To Make diane's chocolate chip date cake

Step 1Grease and flour a 9x13 sheet pan. Preheat oven to 350*.

Step 2Mix and let cool ingredients in step 1. When cool stir in 1/2 package chocolate chips.

Step 3Cream ingredients in step 2.

Step 4Add to creamed mixture all ingredients in step 3. Pour into pan. Sprinkle 1/2 pkg. chocolate chips and 1/2 C. chopped nuts over top of batter.

Step 5Bake 30-45 minutes.
