This recipe was passed down to me by my Grandma and my Momma. They gave me my love of cooking :-) This cake is best after sitting for a day (if you can manage to leave it alone...lol..) my online cookbook: http://tx-cherokee.tripod.com/index.html

Ingredients

  • 1 cup chopped dates* (see note below)
  • 1 cup wesson oil (grandma said it had to be that brand)
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 3 - eggs, beaten
  • 1 cup pecans, chopped
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 cups all purpose flour, sifted well
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons allspice
  • 2 teaspoons ground cloves
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

How To Make date cake

  • Step 1
    Mix all ingredients in a large bowl. Pour into a greased and floured tube pan. Bake in a pre-heated oven at 350 degrees for 55 minutes.
  • Step 2
    NOTE: *Cooked prunes or raisins can be used instead of the dates--or--a combination of these 3....as long as it is 1 cup total.
