dark devil's food cake

I started making this cake when I was 10 years old with my Mom. That was 52 years ago. The only thing I changed was the baking cocoa. Since I am a lover of dark chocolate I now use the Hershey Special Dark baking cocoa. This cake has never failed me. Whether iced or not this cake is great.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 3/4 cups sugar
  • 1/3 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 3/4 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2/3 cup hershy special dark baking cocoa
  • 2/3 cup crisco shortening
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 3 - large eggs

How To Make dark devil's food cake

  • Step 1
    Mix first eight ingredients until blended. Beat on high speed of hand mixer for 2 minutes.
  • Step 2
    Add vanilla and eggs and mix until well blended. Beat on high speed of hand mixer for 2 minutes.
  • Step 3
    Grease and flour cake pan and pour batter into pan.
  • Step 4
    I prefer to sprinkle top of batter with chocolate chips and chopped walnuts before baking. Or you can bake and ice when cooled.
  • Step 5
    Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • Step 6
    Bake: 9 in. layer pans for 30-40 minutes 9in. square or 9 in. x 13 in. pans for 35-40 min. 24 cupcakes for 20-25 min. .
