dark devil's food cake

I started making this cake when I was 10 years old with my Mom. That was 52 years ago. The only thing I changed was the baking cocoa. Since I am a lover of dark chocolate I now use the Hershey Special Dark baking cocoa. This cake has never failed me. Whether iced or not this cake is great.

Ingredients
- 2 cups all purpose flour
- 1 3/4 cups sugar
- 1/3 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 3/4 teaspoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2/3 cup hershy special dark baking cocoa
- 2/3 cup crisco shortening
- 1 cup water
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 3 - large eggs
How To Make dark devil's food cake

Step 1Mix first eight ingredients until blended. Beat on high speed of hand mixer for 2 minutes.

Step 2Add vanilla and eggs and mix until well blended. Beat on high speed of hand mixer for 2 minutes.

Step 3Grease and flour cake pan and pour batter into pan.

Step 4I prefer to sprinkle top of batter with chocolate chips and chopped walnuts before baking. Or you can bake and ice when cooled.

Step 5Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Step 6Bake: 9 in. layer pans for 30-40 minutes 9in. square or 9 in. x 13 in. pans for 35-40 min. 24 cupcakes for 20-25 min. .
