dad's favorite red velvet cake

This homemade red velvet cake is my late father's favorite cake, along with my grandpa, and uncle. There has never been a time where I do not remember there NOT being a Red Velvet cake at their birthdays.

Ingredients

  • CAKE MIX
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup red food coloring
  • 2 tablespoons heaping cocoa powder
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 1/4 cups cake flour
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon vinegar
  • FROSTING
  • 3 tablespoons all purpose flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cup butter (room temp)

How To Make dad's favorite red velvet cake

  • Step 1
    Pre heat oven to * 350 In a Large bowl, cream together shortening,sugar,and eggs. Set aside. make a paste with the food coloring and cocoa powder, then add it to the shortening mixture,
  • Step 2
    Add buttermilk,alternating with flour and salt, mix well, then add vanilla,vinegar,and baking soda. DO NOT BEAT-Blend it.
  • Step 3
    In a lightly greased and flour 9x13 pan or two 9" circle pans. bake for 25-30 min, insert took pick if it comes out clean, its ready!! Remove from oven and let cool completely before icing.
  • Step 4
    While cake is cooling. Prep Frosting: Mix together over a meduim heat on the stove top, Milk and flour until thick, becareful to not burn. Stiring constantly. remove from heat and let cool. Cream together in a seprate bowl, sugar and butter and vanilla. add to the flour and milk, mix until you get a whipped cream affect.
  • Step 5
    Decorate cake and place in the fridge,(cuts cleaner if cold) I pray this recipe finds its way to your table, I know my dad would love knowing that others enjoyed this cake as much as he did. Enjoy :)
