An Amish coffee cake recipe.

*To make a substitute for buttermilk, take one cup of milk and add a tablespoon of either lemon juice or vinegar (I use lemon juice).

Ingredients

3 c
all-purpose flour
2 c
brown sugar
1/2 c
shortening, butter or margarine, softend
1
egg, beaten
1 c
buttermilk* (see my notes)
1 tsp
baking soda
1 tsp
cream of tartar

Step-By-Step

1Preheat oven to 375 F.
2Mix flour and brown sugar together; cut in shortening (or butter/margarine) until mixture is crumbly; take out 1 cup of crumbs for topping.
3Add to remaining crumbs the next four ingredients in the order given; mix well after each addition.
4Pour into a greased 9 X 13-inch baking pan; sprinkle reserved cup of crumbs over top.
5Bake in preheated oven for 25 to 30 minutes.
