An Amish coffee cake recipe. *To make a substitute for buttermilk, take one cup of milk and add a tablespoon of either lemon juice or vinegar (I use lemon juice).

Ingredients
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 cups brown sugar
- 1/2 cup shortening, butter or margarine, softend
- 1 - egg, beaten
- 1 cup buttermilk* (see my notes)
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon cream of tartar
How To Make coffee crumb cake

Step 1Preheat oven to 375 F.

Step 2Mix flour and brown sugar together; cut in shortening (or butter/margarine) until mixture is crumbly; take out 1 cup of crumbs for topping.

Step 3Add to remaining crumbs the next four ingredients in the order given; mix well after each addition.

Step 4Pour into a greased 9 X 13-inch baking pan; sprinkle reserved cup of crumbs over top.

Step 5Bake in preheated oven for 25 to 30 minutes.
