For as long as I can remember, my mom, who many considered the best cook in my hometown of Rochester, NY, made this delicious, moist cake. Everyone loved it. It is easy, easy, easy and best of all I can make it in a pinch because the ingredients are always on hand. It was and is my ultimate comfort food--simply delicious warm or cold. I hope it becomes one of your favorites as well.

  • 1/2 c
  • 1 c
    brown sugar, firmly packed
  • 1/4 tsp
  • 1 tsp
  • 1/2 tsp
  • 1/2 tsp
  • 2 c
    all purpose flour
  • 1 tsp
    baking soda
  • 1 c
    applesauce, unsweetened
  • 1 c

How to Make Chris' Pennsylvania Dutch Applesauce Cake


  1. Preheat oven to 350. Generously grease a 6 x 10 cake pan.
  2. In medium bowl, sift or whisk together flour with salt, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and baking soda. Set aside.
  3. With mixer, cream together butter with brown sugar until fluffy.
  4. With mixer on low, add sifted dry ingredients alternately with the applesauce to the creamed mixture.
  5. Remove from mixer. Stir in raisins. I use a heaping cup.
  6. Bake 35 minutes (check after 30--if toothpick cimes out with moist crumbs or clean it's done).
