  • 1.75 c
    all purpose sifted flour
  • 1 tsp
    baking powder
  • 4 Tbsp
    powdered buttermilk
  • 9 tsp
    cocoa
  • 1 tsp
    vanilla
  • 1.5 c
    sugar
  • 1 tsp
    salt
  • 1 tsp
    cinnamon
  • 1 tsp
    cloves, ground
  • 1 tsp
    allspice
  • 1/2 c
    mayonnaise
  • 3 Tbsp
    mayonnaise
  • 2
    medium eggs
  • 1 c
    sour cream
  • 8 oz
    cream cheese
  • 1/4 c
    butter
  • 2 c
    confectioners' sugar
  • 1/4 c
    cocoa
  • 1 tsp
    vanilla
  • dash(es)
    cinnamon, optional

How to Make Chocolate Romance Cake

Step-by-Step

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Grease and flour two or three 8 inch layer pans or one 9x12x2 cake pan.
  3. Mix all dry ingredients together.
  4. Blend in mayonnaise, eggs, vanilla and 1/2 of sour cream.
  5. Beat 2 minutes at medium speed with mixer or 300 strokes by hand.
  6. Add remaining sour cream and beat 2 minutes longer.
  7. Pour into pans.
  8. Bake 25 to 35 minutes until a toothpick inserted in center comes out "clean".
  9. Cool on rack a few minutes before removing from pan.
  10. When cool, frost cake.
  11. FROSTING: Cream butter and cream cheese together until fluffy, gradually add dry ingredients one at a time until all are well blended.
  12. Add vanilla and blend well.
