chocolate chip date nut cake

This is an old recipe that I can remember showing up at every picnic! As a kid I never appreciated this cake. I wanted gobs of sweet frosting on a cake! Now I love this cake and will make it for Jim and I when we go fishing or just because we like it!

Ingredients
- 1 cup dates, chopped
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 cup boiling water
- 1 cup shortening
- 1 cup sugar
- 2 - eggs
- 1 3/4 cups flour
- 1 heaping tablespoon cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- - sprinkle on top:
- - chocolate chips
- - chopped nuts
- - brown sugar
How To Make chocolate chip date nut cake

Step 1Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Grease and flour a 13x9 inch cake pan.

Step 2Combine dates, baking soda and boiling water. Let cool.

Step 3Cream shortening and sugar. Add eggs and beat until fluffy.

Step 4Stir in cocoa, flour and salt. Mix in cooled date mixture.

Step 5Pour into prepared pan. Sprinkle with nuts, chocolate chips and brown sugar.

Step 6We never measured the topping mixture. I always liked more on top than my mother did. Use about 1/3 brown sugar, 1/3 cup chocolate chips (semi sweet or milk chocolate), 1/3 cup nuts. If you feel you want more on top ~ go for it!

Step 7Bake for 40 minutes. Let cool.
