chocolate chip date cake
This is a recipe that has been around a long time but every time I make it people rave about it. Very tasty and not your typical cake.

Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups chopped dates
- 1 1/2 cups boiling water
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 cup sugar
- 3/4 cup shortening
- 2 - eggs
- 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon soda
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- TOPPING
- 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
- 1 cup semi-sweet mini chocloate chips
- 1/2 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
How To Make chocolate chip date cake

Step 1Chop dates and place in a medium size heat proof bowl. Add baking soda and pour boiling water over dates and soda. Stir and cool. Water will foam up.

Step 2Cream shortening and sugar until well creamed. Add eggs and beat until smooth

Step 3Mix together dry ingredients in separate bowl.

Step 4Drain cooled water from dates and alternately add flour and date water to creamed sugars. Start and end with flour adding a little of each at a time. Stir in vanilla.

Step 5Grease and flour a 9x13 cake pan. Pour batter in pan.

Step 6Mix topping ingredients together in medium size bowl and sprinkle on top of batter.

Step 7Bake at 350 degrees for 30-35 minutes. Bake until toothpick comes out with a moist crumb on the toothpick. Do not overbake.
