Stumbled across this recipe in my Betty Crocker cookbook! The almond paste makes this recipe.

Ingredients

  • 2/3 cup shortening
  • 4 ounces unsweetened chocolate
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 1/4 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 cup slivered almonds, toasted
  • 1 cup almond paste (not marzipan)
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 4 - eggs

How To Make chocolate almond brownies

  • Step 1
    Heat oven to 350 degrees.
  • Step 2
    Whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt; set aside.
  • Step 3
    Chop up almonds paste into small pieces, add to flour mixture.
  • Step 4
    Heat shortening and chocolate in 3-quart saucepan over low heat.
  • Step 5
    Beat eggs and sugar until light.
  • Step 6
    Add cooled chocolate mixture to eggs and sugar.
  • Step 7
    Add flour mixture to chocolate mixture.
  • Step 8
    Mix in toasted almonds.
  • Step 9
    Spread into a greased 9 x 13 pan.
  • Step 10
    Bake until brownies begin to pull away from the sides of pan, about 30 minutes. Do not overbake.
  • Step 11
    Cool slightly. Cut into bars, about 2 x 1 1/2 inches.
  • Step 12
    195 calories per brownie.
  • Step 13
    If using self rising flour, omit baking powder and salt.
