  • 2/3 c
    shortening
  • 4 oz
    unsweetened chocolate
  • 2 c
    sugar
  • 1 1/4 c
    all purpose flour
  • 1 c
    slivered almonds, toasted
  • 1 c
    almond paste (not marzipan)
  • 1 tsp
    baking powder
  • 2 tsp
    salt
  • 4
    eggs

How to Make Chocolate Almond Brownies

Step-by-Step

  1. Heat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt; set aside.
  3. Chop up almonds paste into small pieces, add to flour mixture.
  4. Heat shortening and chocolate in 3-quart saucepan over low heat.
  5. Beat eggs and sugar until light.
  6. Add cooled chocolate mixture to eggs and sugar.
  7. Add flour mixture to chocolate mixture.
  8. Mix in toasted almonds.
  9. Spread into a greased 9 x 13 pan.
  10. Bake until brownies begin to pull away from the sides of pan, about 30 minutes. Do not overbake.
  11. Cool slightly. Cut into bars, about 2 x 1 1/2 inches.
  12. 195 calories per brownie.
  13. If using self rising flour, omit baking powder and salt.
