This is the ultimate icing for decorating cakes. It is not too sweet and you can add different flavorings to go with any cake.

1/2 c
salted butter (room temperature)
1/2 c
butter flavored crisco
1 Tbsp
vanilla flavoring ( or your favorite flavor)
1 lb
box of powdered sugar
2-4 Tbsp
paste food coloring, as desired

How to Make Buttercream Icing


  • 1Cream butter and crisco until smooth, add vanilla or whatever flavoring you like.
  • 2Beat in powdered sugar one cup at a time until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  • 3Add milk a little at a time until desired consistency.
    If you are coloring it, add small amounts of paste color until you get the color you want. Remember the colors deepen as it sits.
  • 4If you are decorating with tips, you want the icing a little stiffer than if you are just icing a cake or cupcakes.
