this recipeis from one of my moms old cake decorating classes

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup solid vegetable shortening
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1 pound (about 4 cups) confectioner's sugar
  • 3 tablespoons cool milk or cream

How To Make buttercream icing

  • Step 1
    Cream Butter and Shorttening togetherwith an electric mixer.
  • Step 2
    Add vanilla and salt>Beat in sugar, 1 cup at a time, bleanding well after addition.
  • Step 3
    Scrape sides and bottom of the bowloften with a spatula. Add milk and beat at high speed until light and fluffy.
  • Step 4
    keep icing covered with lid or damp cloth and store in refrigerator when not in use. yield 3:cups
