This recipe makes enough for a 3-layer cake or 2 2-layer cakes. Can be halved for one 2-layer cake. Really good if you melt chocolate chips and butter and drizzle over the top of the cake to make a HOHO cake.

butter, softened

1 1/3 tsp
pure vanilla extract
chocolate cake

1Bake your favorite chocolate cake according to recipe or directions for a mix. (I use Duncan Hines Dark Chocolate Fudge.)
2Gradually whisk milk and cornstarch together in small saucepan until smooth.
Cook over med/low heat whisking constantly until mixture thickens and boils.
Place saucepan in large bowl of ice water, stirring occasionally, until mixture cools.
3Beat butter and shortening until creamy.
Beat in sugar until light and fluffy.
Add cooled cornstarch mixture and vanilla and beat until creamy.
4Spread filling between layers of chocolate cake and refrigerate 30 minutes to set the filling.
Frost as desired (I make a chocolate ganache.)
