Yes, there are walnuts on the top of the cake because I ran out of pecans, but there are pecans in the cake.

  • 3 cups pecans, chopped
  • 1 1/4 cups butter, softened and divided
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • FROSTING
  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 8 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 can evaporated milk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

How To Make butter pecan layer cake

  • Step 1
    Place the pecans and 1/4 cup butter on a baking sheet and bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes, stirring once in a while. Set aside.
  • Step 2
    Cream the sugar and remaining butter until light and fluffy.
  • Step 3
    Beat eggs one at a time. Stir in vanilla.
  • Step 4
    Combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. Add to the sugar mixture with the buttermilk.

    Stir in 1 1/3 cups of the pecans.

    Pour into two greased round baking pans.
