brown sugar chocolate cake or cupcakes
This is an old south recipe, this version comes from Domino Sugar. My mom made it during the 60's and 70's.

Ingredients
- 1/2 cup shortening
- 2 cups dark brown sugar
- 4 large eggs
- 2 ounces chocolate, unsweetened squares, melted and cooled
- 21/2 cups flour, sifted
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 1/2 cups buttermilk
How To Make brown sugar chocolate cake or cupcakes

Step 1Preheat oven to 325 degrees. In mixer bowl, Cream shortening and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time. Stir in vanilla. Add melted, cooled chocolate. Mix until combined.

Step 2In a seperate bowl, sift together the flour,soda and salt. Add to the batter, alternating with the buttermilk.

Step 3Grease and flour two 9 inch cake pans, or use paper liners for cupcakes.Divide batter evenly between the pans or liners. Bake in a 325 F. degree oven for 40 minuitesd for layers, or 20 min. for one pan of cupcakes at a time. Toothpick inserted in the center should come out clean, but do not overbake. Set pans on cooling wire racks for 10 minuites before removing. Cool before frosting, about 30 min.

Step 4Frosting: 1/2 Cup butter 3 oz of cream cheese 1 teaspoon vanilla 4 cups powdered sugar 2 tablespoons milk 2 oz. unsweetened chocolate, melted and cooled. Combine butter, cream cheese, vanilla and with electric mixer, beat until light and fluffy. Add sugar slowly on low speed. Stir in milk and melted chocolate. Frost cooled cakes thickly.
