black walnut cake

I remember sitting with my grandfather as he would peel and shell the black walnuts for my grandmother. His hands would become stained from the walnuts. He always said it was worth it,just to enjoy grandma's cake! The aroma was wonderful!

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups white sugar
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 3 - eggs
  • 1 cup sour milk
  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup chopped black walnuts
  • 7 MINUTE ICING
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1/3 cup cold water
  • 2 - egg whites
  • 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

How To Make black walnut cake

  • Step 1
    Combine all ingredients for cake and beat until smooth.
  • Step 2
    pour into 2 greased and floured 8'' layer pans
  • Step 3
    Bake at 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes
  • Step 4
    Ice with 7 minute icing
  • Step 5
    combine 1st four ingreedients in top of double boiler. Beat with electric mixer for 30 seconds.Place over boiling water.(upper pan should not touch water
  • Step 6
    Cook, beating conctantly on high speed for about 7 min. or untilstiff peaks form.
  • Step 7
    Remove from heat, add vanilla. Beat 2-3 min. or until of spreading consistantcy. Will frost 2 8 or 9 inch layers.
