I came across this recipe in 1992 from Classic Baking with Hershey's. Just love this one. A chocolate dream.

Ingredients

sugar
1 3/4 c
all-purpose flour
3/4 c
hershey's cocoa
2 tsp
baking soda
1 tsp
baking powder
1 tsp
salt
2
eggs
1 c
strong black coffee or 2 tsps powdered instant coffee plus 1 cup boiling water
1 c
buttermilk or sour milk*
1/2 c
vegetable oil
1 tsp
pure vanilla extract

How to Make Black Magic Cake

Step-by-Step

  • 1Heat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease and flour (2) 9 inch round baking pans or (1) 13x9x2 baking pan.
  • 2In large mixer bowl, stir together sugar, flour, cocoa, baking soda, baking powder and salt. Add eggs, coffee, buttermilk, oil and vanilla; beat on medium speed of electric mixer 2 minutes (batter will be thin). Pour patter into prepared pan(s).
  • 3Bake 30 to 35 minutes for round pans, 35 to 40 minutes for rectangular pan or until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes; remove from pans to wire racks. Cool completely. Frost as desired.
  • 4*To sour milk: Use 1 Tablespoon white vinegar plus milk to equal 1 cup.
    For buttermilk I use powdered buttermilk that I push through a small screened strainer adding it to the dry ingredients, following the directions to make 1 cup buttermilk.
