I got this from a friend, probably 35 yrs ago. She made cakes for weddings and special occasions. This is the recipe she used. I made all of my childrens birthday cakes. And quite a few of my grandchildrens birthday cakes. This is a very good cake. very moist. The longer it sits the better it is.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup crisco
  • 3 - eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla flavoring
  • 3 cups flour, al purpose
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 cup warm water

How To Make birthday cake

  • Step 1
    Preheat oven to 350. Grease and flour pans and set aside. You can make 3-8" layers or 2-9" layers or 1 -9 x 13.
  • Step 2
    Mix sugar & crisco, add eggs 1 at a time mixing after each egg.
  • Step 3
    Dissolve the baking soda in the 1/2 cup warm water. Set aside
  • Step 4
    Sift flour into the mixture alternately with the buttermilk. Add vanilla, mix in the water with soda dissolved in it last.
  • Step 5
    Makes 3-8" layers, 2-9" layers or 1- 9" x 13". Bake 350 for 35-45 minutes. You can make chocolate by adding 3 tsp. cocoa to the soda & water.
