I got this from a friend, probably 35 yrs ago. She made cakes for weddings and special occasions. This is the recipe she used. I made all of my childrens birthday cakes. And quite a few of my grandchildrens birthday cakes. This is a very good cake. very moist. The longer it sits the better it is.

Ingredients

  • 2 c
    sugar
  • 1 c
    crisco
  • 3
    eggs
  • 1 tsp
    vanilla flavoring
  • 3 c
    flour, al purpose
  • 1 c
    buttermilk
  • 1 tsp
    baking soda
  • 1/2 c
    warm water

How to Make Birthday Cake

Step-by-Step

  1. Preheat oven to 350. Grease and flour pans and set aside. You can make 3-8" layers or 2-9" layers or 1 -9 x 13.
  2. Mix sugar & crisco, add eggs 1 at a time mixing after each egg.
  3. Dissolve the baking soda in the 1/2 cup warm water.
    Set aside
  4. Sift flour into the mixture alternately with the buttermilk. Add vanilla, mix in the water with soda dissolved in it last.
  5. Makes 3-8" layers, 2-9" layers or 1- 9" x 13". Bake 350 for 35-45 minutes. You can make chocolate by adding 3 tsp. cocoa to the soda & water.
