beer cake with caramel frosting

This is from another cooking site, and is a wonderful cake. The Caramel frosting will lend itself well to other cake recipes.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups brown sugar
  • 1 cup shortening, (not oil)
  • 2 - eggs, beaten
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 3 cups flour
  • 12 ounces good quality beer, not a light beer
  • CARAMEL FROSTING
  • 1/2 cup butter, not margarine, melt butter slowly
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups powered sugar

How To Make beer cake with caramel frosting

  • Step 1
    Cream sugar and shortening together, add beaten eggs.
  • Step 2
    In another bowl sift flour, spices, soda and salt together.
  • Step 3
    Add flour and beer alternately to the sugar mixture. Starting and ending with the flour mixture. Beat well.
  • Step 4
    Pour into a prepared bundt pan and bake at 350 degrees for about an hour or until cake tester comes out clean.
  • Step 5
    Frost with the caramel frosting or it is also very good left plain.
  • Step 6
    NOTE: Dates and or nuts can also be added to this cake. I added pecans to mine.
  • Step 7
    CARAMEL FROSTING
  • Step 8
    Combine butter and brown sugar in a sauce pan and cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until sugar disolves.
  • Step 9
    Add milk and bring to a boil. Stiring not to let stick or burn.
  • Step 10
    Remove from heat and cool slightly. Add powdered sugar and beat to a smooth spreading consistency.
  • Step 11
    Spread on cool cake.
