This is from another cooking site, and is a wonderful cake. The Caramel frosting will lend itself well to other cake recipes.

Ingredients

  • 2 c
    brown sugar
  • 1 c
    shortening, (not oil)
  • 2
    eggs, beaten
  • 1 tsp
    ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp
    ground allspice
  • 1/2 tsp
    ground cloves
  • 2 tsp
    baking soda
  • 2 tsp
    salt
  • 3 c
    flour
  • 12 oz
    good quality beer, not a light beer
  • CARAMEL FROSTING

  • 1/2 c
    butter, not margarine, melt butter slowly
  • 1 c
    brown sugar
  • 1/4 c
    milk
  • 1/4 tsp
    salt
  • 1 tsp
    vanilla extract
  • 2 c
    powered sugar

How to Make Beer Cake with Caramel Frosting

Step-by-Step

  1. Cream sugar and shortening together, add beaten eggs.
  2. In another bowl sift flour, spices, soda and salt together.
  3. Add flour and beer alternately to the sugar mixture. Starting and ending with the flour mixture. Beat well.
  4. Pour into a prepared bundt pan and bake at 350 degrees for about an hour or until cake tester comes out clean.
  5. Frost with the caramel frosting or it is also very good left plain.
  6. NOTE: Dates and or nuts can also be added to this cake. I added pecans to mine.
  7. CARAMEL FROSTING
  8. Combine butter and brown sugar in a sauce pan and cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until sugar disolves.
  9. Add milk and bring to a boil. Stiring not to let stick or burn.
  10. Remove from heat and cool slightly. Add powdered sugar and beat to a smooth spreading consistency.
  11. Spread on cool cake.
