Ingredients
- 2 cups unbleached all purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons cocoa, unsweetened
- 1-1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1-1/2 cup white sugar
- 2 medium eggs
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 2 cups applesauce, unsweetened
- 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
- 1/2 cup chopped walnuts

Step 1Preheat oven to 350.

Step 2Grease and flour 9X13 inch pan. Sift together the flour, cocoa, baking soda and salt in a bowl. Det aside.

Step 3In a large bowl cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy, using an electric mixer set on medium speed.

Step 4Beat in the eggs one at a time. Blend in the vanilla extract. Beat in the flour mixture alternately with the applesauce.

Step 5Pour the batter into a 9x13 inch baking pan. Sprinkle with chocolate chips and chopped walnuts.

Step 6Bake at 350 for 35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Cool in the pan on a wire rack. This can easily be made in a cupcake pan.
