apple shortcake
This recipe is from my junior high cooking class. Very good and simple. It is funny to see my beginning cooking era recipes compared to my Great, Great Auntie's--hers only has list of ingredients with amounts! ;)

Ingredients
- 2 cups sifted flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/8 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
- 1 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
- 1/2 cup butter, softened
- 1 - egg
- 3/4 cup milk
- 1 large tart apple, pared, cored and thinly sliced
- 1 tablespoon sugar
How To Make apple shortcake

Step 1Heat oven 350. grease 9" pie plate. Bake 45 minutes until center is firm.

Step 2Sift together dry ingredients into a large bowl, stir in brown sugar, cut in 6 Tbsp, butter until crumbly. (save 1/2 cup for topping)

Step 3Break egg in glass measuring cup; stir with fork; add milk to make 1 cup (it will take about 3/4 c.)Stir into flour mixture until well blended; pour into greased 9" pie plate

Step 4Arrange apple slices overlapping in two circles on top of crumbs.

Step 5Sprinkle with saved 1/2 c. crumb mixture and dot with saved 1 Tbsp butter. Sprinkle lightly with sugar. Bake 45 minutes.

Step 6Serve warm. Plain, with ice cream or whipped cream.
