apfel kuchen (apple cake)

This is my great grossmutter Weirauch's recipe. She came over to America from Germany as a teenager. It is one of the few "original" recipes I have of hers. The mace gives it a distinctive taste. I hope you enjoy it!

Ingredients

  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 2 tablespoons shortening
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 - egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon mace
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup milk (little less than 1/2 cup)
  • 2-3 cups chopped apples
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1 dash salt
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup flour

How To Make apfel kuchen (apple cake)

  • Step 1
    Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour glass 9 X 13.
  • Step 2
    Sift first two dry ingredients. Set aside.
  • Step 3
    In mixing bowl, cream shortening and 1 cup of sugar. Add egg. Add sifted dry ingredients along with mace and salt. Add milk.
  • Step 4
    Spread in prepared 9 x 13. (I use a greased spatula to help spread). Top with apples. Sprinkle 1/2 cup sugar over top.
  • Step 5
    In bowl prepare struesel. (4 T. butter, 1/2 cup sugar, 1/4 cup flour). Crumble struesel over apples on cake.
  • Step 6
    Bake for 40 minutes.
