Ingredients

  • 4 ounces unsweetened chocolate
  • 1/2 pound butter
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • 4 - eggs
  • ICING INGREDIENTS
  • 2 sticks butter, softened
  • 2 tablespoons meringue powder
  • 2 pounds confectioners' sugar
  • 4 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 teaspoons butter flavoring
  • 16 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 4 tablespoons water

How To Make all-american chocolate cake

  • Step 1
    Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • Step 2
    In a small, heavy-bottomed pan, melt chocolate and butter, stirring over low heat until smooth and melted.
  • Step 3
    Remove from heat and stir in vanilla.
  • Step 4
    In large bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt.
  • Step 5
    Add chocolate mixture, milk and eggs, beating until smooth.
  • Step 6
    Spread mixture in two greased and floured 9 inch round cake pans.
  • Step 7
    Bake for 30 to 35 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center of cake comes out clean.
  • Step 8
    Cool in pans 5 minutes before turning out onto wire rack.
  • Step 9
    ICING DIRECTIONS
  • Step 10
    Blend butter, vanilla extract, butter flavor and water together. Then add confectioners sugar and meringue powder and blend. Add cocoa and blend again.
