From ' A Yankee Christmas ' 1991
Made many times for its dark chocolate taste, fine texture and easy prep. The frosting alone makes any cake great!

3 oz
chocolate, unsweetened squares
1/3 c
strong coffee
1/4 c
butter, softened
2 1/4 c
brown sugar, firmly packed
1 tsp
2 c
all purpose flour
1 tsp
baking soda
1/2 tsp
1 c
strong coffee

How to Make A Favorite chocolate cake


  • 1Melt chocolate in 1/3 cup coffee over low heat,stirring. Set aside to cool slightly.
  • 2Measure and sift the dry ingredients together.
  • 3Cream butter and brown sugar very well.
  • 4Add one egg at a time beat well after each one.
  • 5Add vanilla and blend in the chocolate. Beat well.
  • 6Add dry ingredients alternately with the cup of coffee -use low speed and just combine.
  • 7Put into 2- 9 inch pans or a 10x 13 pan that is well buttered and lined with wax paper.
  • 8Bake in a 350 degree oven until cooked through 35 or 40 minutes.
  • 9Cool 10 minutes in pans, then remove to cool on racks and frost with Dark Chocolate Frosting when cooled.
