I got this recipe from my mother who was a wonderful cook. She always made it for my brother on his birthday. Because of the unusual ingredient we just called it 'Mayonnaise' cake! Anyway you call it, this is a unique-tasting cake that can become addictive!

granulated sugar
1 c
2 c
sifted all-purpose flour
4 Tbsp
cocoa powder
1 c
cold water
1 1/2 tsp
baking soda
1/2 tsp
table salt
1/2 tsp
vanilla extract


1 lb
powdered (confectioners) sugar
3 oz
cream cheese, softened
1 Tbsp
lemon juice (adjust amount to taste)

How to Make $1,000 Cake


  • 1In mixing bowl, cream sugar and mayonnaise together until well blended.
  • 2Add flour and cocoa powder and mix well.
  • 3In small bowl, mix water and baking soda together and then add to mixing bowl.
  • 4Add salt and vanilla, mixing just until blended.
  • 5Pour into greased and floured 9 x 13-inch or 8-inch square (depending on whether you want a thicker or thinner cake) metal or glass baking pan.
  • 6Bake at 350 for 35-40 minutes until toothpick inserted into center of cake comes out clean.
  • 7For icing: Mix all ingredients together until smooth.
  • 8While cake is still warm, spread icing on to it. Let cake cool completely before serving.
