1/4 cup granulated sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
4 medium pears, peeled and sliced about 1/4-inch thick (Pick good baking pears like Bosc or Anjou.)
2 tablespoons firmly packed light or dark brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
2 tablespoons chopped hazelnuts
ice cream or sweetened whipped cream, for serving
