"This recipe for Czech butter cookies or maslove pecivo (mahss-LAW-vay peh-CHEE-vaw) is often served at Christmas time when they become part of vanocni cukrovi (vah-NAWTCH-nee koo-KRAW-vee) or Christmas sweets, the baking for which usually begins on St. Nicholas Day, Dec. 6. This is my favorite recipe because it can be piped out or forced through a cookie press or, if refrigerated for a few hours, rolled into balls and turned into thumbprint cookies filled with jam. 8 ounces (2 sticks) softened butter
1/2 cup sugar
2 large egg yolks (leftover egg white recipes)
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 cups all-purpose flour

Candied cherries, toasted nuts, sprinkles (optional)
Jam or fruit filling (optional)
