This is the way my husband and I have started our day for 54 years. Breakfast is our main meal of the day and we are unable to function without our hot biscuits and a good cup of coffee. My grandchildren all love to come to our house on the week-ends to eat biscuits and gravy.

Ingredients

  • 2 c
    all purpose flour
  • 4 tsp
    baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp
    salt
  • 2 Tbsp
    shortening
  • 3/4 c
    buttermilk
  • SAWMILL GRAVY

  • 2 Tbsp
    sausage drippings
  • 2 Tbsp
    flour
  • 1/2 c
    milk, low-fat
  • 1/2 c
    water
  • 1/2 tsp
    salt
  • 1/2 tsp
    pepper
  • 1 large
    sausage pattie, cooked and crumbled

How to Make Southern Country Biscuits with Sawmill Gravy

Step-by-Step

  1. For the biscuits, combine flour, baking powder, and salt
  2. Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Add milk and stir until blended.
  4. Turn dough out onto floured surface and knead 3 times.
  5. Pat out to 1/2-inch thickness and cut with biscuit cutter.
  6. Place on a greased baking sheet and bake at 450 degrees for 15 minutes or until brown.
  7. For the Gravy:
    Lightly brown the flour in the sausage drippings on medium heat.
  8. Add milk, water and crumbled sausage, stirring constantly until desired thickness
  9. Remove from heat immediately and add salt and pepper
  10. Serve over hot biscuits
