This is the way my husband and I have started our day for 54 years. Breakfast is our main meal of the day and we are unable to function without our hot biscuits and a good cup of coffee. My grandchildren all love to come to our house on the week-ends to eat biscuits and gravy.

Ingredients

2 c
all purpose flour
4 tsp
baking powder
1/2 tsp
salt
2 Tbsp
shortening
3/4 c
buttermilk

SAWMILL GRAVY

2 Tbsp
sausage drippings
2 Tbsp
flour
1/2 c
milk, low-fat
1/2 c
water
1/2 tsp
salt
1/2 tsp
pepper
1 large
sausage pattie, cooked and crumbled

How to Make Southern Country Biscuits with Sawmill Gravy

Step-by-Step

  • 1For the biscuits, combine flour, baking powder, and salt
  • 2Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • 3Add milk and stir until blended.
  • 4Turn dough out onto floured surface and knead 3 times.
  • 5Pat out to 1/2-inch thickness and cut with biscuit cutter.
  • 6Place on a greased baking sheet and bake at 450 degrees for 15 minutes or until brown.
  • 7For the Gravy:
    Lightly brown the flour in the sausage drippings on medium heat.
  • 8Add milk, water and crumbled sausage, stirring constantly until desired thickness
  • 9Remove from heat immediately and add salt and pepper
  • 10Serve over hot biscuits
