I like using steel cut oats but it takes a long time to cook. Recently, I found quick steel cut oats at Aldi which cut the prep time. You could also use regular or quick rolled oats, just make sure you check the package for the correct amount of time to cook. I also had a bunch of frozen strawberries from last summer that I wanted to use up.

prep time 5 Min
cook time 10 Min
method Stove Top
yield 2 serving(s)

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 1/2 cup quick steel cut oats
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 cup frozen strawberries (fresh work, too)
  • 1 tablespoon sliced or slivered almonds
  • 1-2 teaspoon turbinado, brown or white sugar (or sprinkles!)
  • half and half (or heavy cream or milk), to serve

How To Make oatmeal with strawberries and almonds

  • Step 1
Boil the water then add oats. Simmer for about 5-7 minutes, covered or until water is almost all absorbed. Check the package for exact directions.
  • Step 2
Add the frozen strawberries. Keep heat very low until strawberries have thawed and warmed up.
  • Step 3
Divide among two serving bowls, sprinkle almonds and sugar of choice on top. Pour on as much half and half as you like. Serve.
