knabbeln (how to use stale bread with coffee)
Updated on Jun 8, 2023
This is more a concept than an actual recipe... You can make this with any plain bread or with a stale Brioche. This used to be a common breakfast around here (Westmunsterland, Germany). Cook time is a guess, you have to watch for desired crispness...

- 1 tablespoon butter, melted
- 2 teaspoons brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
How To Make knabbeln (how to use stale bread with coffee)
-
Step 1Preheat oven to 350°F, then break the stale bread into pieces suitable for dipping in coffee.
-
Step 2Place the bread chunks onto a baking tray lined with nonstick baking parchment.
-
Step 3Optionally mix melted butter with sugar and cinnamon, and brush the bread chunks with the mixture.
-
Step 4Toast bread chunks in the oven until light brown and crisp (depending on your liking - as you will soften them by dipping, every stage of crispness before burning is okay).
-
Step 5Let toasted bread chunks cool and either store them in a cookie container or use them immediately for dipping in hot coffee.
