Ingredients

  • 4 c
    milk
  • 1 c
    grits
  • 1/2 c
    butter
  • 1 large
    egg, lightly beaten
  • 1 tsp
    salt
  • 1/2 tsp
    white pepper
  • 1/3 c
    butter, melted
  • 1 c
    gruyere cheese, shredded (4 ounces)
  • 1/2 c
    parmesan cheese, freshly grated

How to Make Gruyere Cheese Grits

Step-by-Step

  1. Preheat oven to 350F.
  2. Bring milk to a boil in a large saucepan over medium heat, stirring frequently. Add grits and butter, stirring until butter melts.
  3. Cook for 5 minutes, stirring constantly, or until the consistency of oatmeal. Remove from heat.
  4. Stir a small amount of the hot grits mixture into the egg. Add egg mixture back into grits mixture, stirring until well blended.
  5. Stir in salt, white pepper, melted butter and Gruyère, blending well.
  6. Spoon into a greased 2-quart baking dish.
  7. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese.
  8. Bake for 1 hour, covering with foil, if necessary, to prevent overbrowning.
